Configuring Mac Mail using POP Settings

You can use Mac Mail to send and receive emails tied to your domain and mapped to your online account. There are two ways of doing this - POP and IMAP. We recommend that you do not use POP but set up an IMAP account instead since IMAP keeps folders and emails in your Mac Mail client in sync with your folders and emails on the server. POP is a simple one-way pull of emails and can often lead to confusion if you use more than one client or Smartphone with POP.  Please note that only emails from your Inbox will be pulled into your Mac Mail. If you have message rules that put incoming messages in other folders, they will not be pulled into your Mac Mail client.

Despite the disadvantages of POP, if you have a compelling business reason to use POP rather than IMAP, please carefully follow the steps outlined below. Otherwise, follow the instructions to setup IMAP in your Mac Mail.

1. Under Mail, Preferences, Account, click the "+" sign to create your account.

  • Enter your full "Email Address" in lower case letters and "Password" (case sensitive).
  • Click "Continue" when done.

2. Enter the Incoming Mail Server Information as below:

  • For your POP account, the incoming mail server is "mail.odmailbox.com".
  • Enter your full email address in lower case letters as the "User Name" and then your "Password" (case sensitive).
  • Click "Continue" when done.

 3. Enter the Outgoing Mail Server Information as below:

  • Enter a descriptor in the Description field.
  • Enter "mail.odmailbox.com" as the outgoing mail server and check "Use only this server".
  • Check "Use Authentication" and enter your full email address (in lower case letters) as the "User Name" and then your "Password" (case sensitive).
  • Click "Continue" to move to the next steps.

Important: If Mac Mail is trying to find the outgoing server for more than 30 seconds, simply click "Cancel" and then "Continue" again. You will then be at Step 4.

4. Review your account information.

  • Review your settings as described in Step 5 and Step 6.
  • Check "Take account online" and click "Create".

5. Review your "Account Information" to make sure that your entries are as shown below.

You should also double-check the port numbers in your configuration.

  • If Incoming has SSL turned ON, the port should be 995
  • If incoming has SSL turned OFF, the port should be 110
  • You can do this under the Advanced tab.
  • If outgoing has SSL turned ON, the port should be 465
  • If outgoing has SSL turned OFF, we recommend port 587 (25 is often blocked by ISPs).
  • You can do this under Outgoing Mail Server, Edit Server List and select the newly entered server.

These port settings are extremely important and should be verified. Mac Mail sometime selects ports in a seemingly random way without allowing users to specify them during account setup.

6. As a final step, close your Mac Mail application and open it again to allow your new account settings to take effect.
